Why Climb?

Indoor climbing centers have helped make an esoteric, extreme sport accessible to millions. As the the appeal of climbing has been discovered by more people, indoor climbing has evolved into a challenging and rewarding sport in its own right. But what is indoor climbing really about? Newcomers to the sport are often surprised to discover that climbing is far more multidimensional than they first thought. The rewards are many.

Physical
Climbing promotes strength, flexibility, balance, and control. Climbing provides balanced, low impact exercise. It develops core strength in a natural way yet you get a superb workout for every part of your body. Regular climbing is an excellent way to get into shape and stay that way.

Mental & Spiritual
Climbing demands and rewards total focus. Thought, visualization of movement and problem solving are needed to solve the riddle of the next move. When making the move there’s no room for fear or doubt, only the commitment that ensures that you’ll reach the next hold. The climber is fully engaged in the moment. Distractions evaporate, liberating the climber from stress. The challenges remain fresh, since the climbing routes are changed regularly. There is true joy of achievement from overcoming doubts, focusing and solving a route. Self-esteem and confidence blossom, regardless of age. Many come to view climbing as central to their general wellness, much the way that others view yoga or meditation.

Social
Rock Climbing is one of the rare sports that can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities. It’s fun from the very first climb. It’s a naturally social activity because everyone takes turns. Abilities needn’t be matched to climb together. Children love to share in each other’s successes. Teens find the thrills they crave in a fun and positive setting. Active adults enjoy learning the sport, unwinding with friends or partners, and meeting new people in a relaxed setting. Climbers quickly coalesce into a community of kindred spirits.

Do You have a Belayer??

Belaying.” is the process of managing the safety rope. Every climber at VC requires a belayer. Unlike some recreation centers and climbing gyms, The VC does NOT provide automatic belay devices for unattended climbing. Nor do we routinely provide belayers or “attendants” to manage the safety ropes. It’s important to understand exactly what this means. If you can’t belay and you haven’t arranged for a belayer in advance, you probably won’t be able to climb. We strongly urge first time visitors to call ahead to discuss what arrangements would be best for you or your group.

Climbing sessions with our belayers are generally 1 hour long. Our belayers are specially trained to work with first-time climbers and make sure everyone is having a great time. To ensure the best climbing experience we limit the number of belayers on the floor at any time. Everyone will get plenty of climbing while at the same time getting the rest breaks they need to climb their best.

Belayers are available on weekends by appointment or on a first-come first-served basis. Weekends fill up very fast. Avoid disappointment! It’s advisable to book several days in advance. Weekday belayer availability is limited. Please call to discuss the specifics of your visit so we can arrange staffing.

NUTS & BOLTS
Pricing below includes gym entry fee, instructor fee, and harness rental. Climbing shoe rental and belayer tip are not included.

* 1 hour of unlimited climbing for 1 person with a VC instructor: $19
* Each additional climber: $10 (pass and harness included)
* Additional 30 minutes of climbing: $5

Availability & Times:
Staff belayers are available during regular Open Hours
Belayers are on a first-come first-served basis. To avoid disappointment we strongly discourage walk-ins for 1 hour belay slots. It’s best to arrive a few minutes early to get signed in and get geared up. Arriving late may cut your session short.

Reservations:
Reserve your time slot by calling several days ahead. Otherwise it’s first-come first-serve (and on weekends it’s long odds).

Group size & ages:
To ensure a quality climbing experience for you and our members, belay groups are limited to a total of 5 people per belayer. This can be up to 5 climbers, 1 climber and 4 observers or any other combination. We cannot “double up” belayers for larger groups. If your party is over 5 climbers please call to arrange a group visit. The minimum age for a belay group is 5 yrs old.

Clothing & gear:
Kids should wear sneakers. We’ll provide everything else! Clothing should allow freedom of movement. Very baggy clothes and short shorts can make the harness uncomfortable. What works for yoga works well for climbing.

Waiver:
Everyone needs a waiver to climb. For climbers under 18 it must be signed by a parent or legal guardian. If you are bringing other kids please make sure that their parent has completed the waiver. You can download one
here.

Belay Check-out Fee: $5.00 (must have a belay check to be allowed to belay in our gym-minimum belay age is 12 yrs. old)

RENTALS:

Rental Package $7.00(harness, shoes, free chaulk)
Single Item Rental $4.00

Belay device- $2.00 (grig-gri, ATC, or such)

What is required for equipment rentals? When you rent equipment at The VC, you are accepting responsibility to return it in good working condition. Your ID card will be returned to you when the equipment is returned in good condition. You will be charged for lost or damaged equipment according at prevailing rates.

But what if I don't have an id card? Then a parent, guardian, or other individual with a valid ID card must accept responsibility for your equipment's return and condition. Individuals with a valid ID card can have more than one set of equipment secured in their name.

Rental Equipment is on a first-come basis. All prices are subject to change. Climbing is only allowed after paying the membership fee. The gym is a PRIVATE facility and not open to the public.
